Sometimes in sports, the unlikeliest of heroes are waiting on the bench. These players are staying ready and prepared at any given moment for their number is called.
Inside of South Davidson High School's gymnasium, you'll find one player working on his crossovers and sinking his free throws all for a bigger purpose.
Aaron Ferguson, a special needs student enrolled in his school's adaptive curriculum, is also a senior guard who has spent this season lacing his shoes up for the South Davidson Wildcats varsity basketball team.
Described by his teammates and team's coaching staff as the first person to arrive for practices and a relentless motivator, Ferguson believes that being a part of a basketball team is an opportunity to lead by example, both on and off the court, for those seated in the stands and beyond.
“It’s something that we can inspire people and make the crowd go wild," Ferguson said.
During a matchup on the road against South Stokes High School last Tuesday, the Wildcats trailed by a lopsided score of 87-16 with just under five minutes remaining in the game.
It was at this moment that Ferguson, who was sitting on the bench and cheering on his teammates, would have his name called to the scorer's table by his head coach to get his first minutes of action in the game.
As the Wildcats crossed over the half-court line, the 6-foot senior guard would quickly find his spot in the left corner and patiently wait for their offensive play to be called out.
In the blink of an eye, Ferguson would be passed the basketball by his teammate. Without any hesitation, he pulled up and calmly released a corner three-pointer.
It was nothing but net. #LocalNews
