What's Left To RESTORE of the CHESTERFIELD CANAL?

Описание: We're back on the Chesterfield Canal restoration story to look at what's left to restore. Whilst things are taking shape in the background, ready for the next cycle of groundwork and reconstruction of the canal cutting. We're having walk of the entire 9 miles of the canal to be restored. Starting at the new Transpennine Trail Bridge at Stavaley.

We're heading over the puddlebank to the site of the Doe Lea crossing. A new aqueduct will carry the canal. Towards Renishaw we pass the Norbriggs Cutting branch.
Out through Renishaw and under Spinkhill Lane (& wharf) and we meet the former railway line that diverted the canal to a new straight alignment in 1892.

Some interesting narrows half way though before we reach Killamarsh. Housing development many decades ago mean that a new route is required through the town. We see the plans for the new lock flghts - three pairs of double locks (Killamarsh Top Double, Middle Double and Bottom Double Locks) - before the canal enters the Nethermore Lake, where we will see a marina built allowing boaters access to Rother Valley Country Park.

Exiting Nethermore Lake will see the canal climb a five rise lock system (Moorhouse Flight ) to rejoin the original alignment.

After crossing under Rotherham Road, we enter the historic Norwood area - Norwood Bridge followed quickly by Norwood Locks. Four staircases consisting of a three sets of three-rise and a four-rise. Lots of restoration work required here.

This would be the site of the Norwood Tunnel. We look at the options available to go over or under. We look at plans to build a new shorter tunnel that then passes through the Kiveton Community Woodland area (former Kiveton Colliery). We enter Shireoaks Waters - 3 lakes current leased out for fishing.

From here the canal should re-enter the east end of the old Norwood Tunnel.
