Here is a journey I took from SNCF AGCs 76531 and 76768 on the 8/7/23 on part of their journey from Lyon to Clermont-Ferrand. This video didn't come out quite as well as I would have liked as the train was packed. I had to film through a door window, which was a bit limiting! The AGCs on the Roanne line are a mix of diesel and dual mode units. This train confused me slightly as arrived at Lyon with its pantographs down- but it would, as it is the diesel variant without pantographs!! However, it did not seem 100% healthy as the generator in the end car seemed to be out of action. There was a nice selection of BB69000s in the Saint-Germain-au-Mont-d'Or yard, as well as some interesting withdrawn units and RIOs. Also, a great view from the magnificent Tarare viaduct. The video also conveys the haul up the Ramp des Sauvages.
I had forgot that in France, there are charging points everywhere, but only 0.23% of these ever work at any given time. This meant I could not charge my devices on the outward journey and spent ages looking for a working charger in Lyon-Part-Dieu. There were so many charge points broken that I was convinced it was my cable- I bought a replacement just to find that wasn't the problem. I wasted a large amount of videoing time at Lyon finding a working charger- then found the points on the return train were also not working. My iPhone made it to the Ramp des Sauvages (where this video ends)- I'm afraid Pt2 is on my cheap Android, at 30fps. I tried to integrate the two video sources, but it was just not going to work. I will have to go back for retakes.
This is a lovely line- be aware that some services are practically empty, and others filled to the rafters. You can get between Roanne and Lyon and back for around 20 euros if you can bag one of the bargain fares on offer.
