Pure silver is nearly white, lustrous, soft, very ductile, malleable, it is an excellent conductor of heat and electricity. It is not a chemically active metal, but can be attacked by nitric acid.
Unlike other precious metals, silver has a Internal crystal structure which is unlike the rest. This formation of crystals can become unstable when heated to Cherry red color, at this temperature, roughly 1400°f, any pressure or motion can cause disruption into the molecular structure, literally making the silver fall apart if even small amounts are applied. This is a result of silver finding itself in the rare category of being red short. While most metals can be worked red hot, and this is actually ideal in most scenarios , silver must be worked cold, using heat to bring it to a softer state, but never when being formed. Sooo if you have never experienced a piece of red hot silver splattering when struck with a hammer consider yourself lucky and learn from my mistakes.
This is why proper annealing is paramount. The metal will give you no assistance by means of radiant glow to indicate its current temperature while forging. The quickness with which silver conduct heat is truly staggering so many and it can easily melt on you by accident at first. The issue as I see it as many have learned to anneal silver just enough to not risk it overheating, and few ever learn the bring the silver tons dead soft state.
The prescribed method normally simply heat to dull red and quench. When this is done the metal will now be in a state which is perfectly safe to work and somewhat malleable. However its stiffness may not diminish all that much relative to how it can get, and you may find the silver is still quite resistant and will quickly become very difficult.
In order to go beyond this the molecular structure must be manipulated to it’s limits
Using this technique shown in this video isit can be still made much softer
to be processed down to its most malleable state, it must be brought slightly higher, the color in this video is in very good indication and kept there for a minimum of 25 seconds, then air cooled the black and finally quenched in cool or water.
Upon coming from the water the silver will be in an extremely plastic state, and will make your projects for any jewelry all the easier to form.
