Russell Scott Valentino remarks that the opening scenes of the film depicting Oblomov's dream of his childhood on his parents' estate contrast with the watercolors of St. Petersburg that immediately follow. He writes that "while every structure is a recognizable monument to that great 'abstract and intentional city,' none is recognizable in its actual surroundings. Indeed, as depicted, the buildings have no surroundings but snow drifts and bare trees. It is as if the defenseless child of the dream, in passing into the modern, West European spaces of the capital, has entered a barren, inhuman wasteland of stone and frozen concrete..." (160).
