The City of Cape Town, Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis, has given the national Public Works Department an ultimatum to respond before the 16th of June to his letter, or the city will seek a court order to conduct removals of urban dwellers, currently illegally occupying the land in the precint of the Castle of Good Hope. Hill-Lewis wants the Public Works Department to give consent for the evictions. The historic site, under the custodianship of the Defence Department which was declared a national heritage site in 1936, has seen the mushrooming of shacks in the last two years ...
