The top search under the “how to” category in India from last year has been people wanting to know how they can stop sun damage for their hair.

I personally don’t know of many hair care products, and I hope you can guess why, but regardless, I know of sunscreen for one’s skin... suddenly, it seems odd how people are looking for home remedies to prevent sun damage for their hair.

When I search for it, I only find sun protection hair care from Kerastase.

It’s a Rs 4600 hair mask, and a Rs 3000 shampoo, both in just 200 ml packaging.

On further searching, I found a Sun Protector hair serum from The Earth Collective priced at Rs 850 for 100 ml - which is again Rs. 1700 for 200 ml with an SPF 15.

If this is the most searched “how to” item from 2023 in India, how many hair care and personal care brands are actually actioning on it?

Am I missing something here? Is it something that brands have been evaluating but they think the market is too small? Where is the philosophy of building backwards from what consumers want.

I went to Nykaa and the moment I typed “sunscreen”, I saw a recommendation on “sunscreen for hair” that is probably based on prior consumer search...

43 results... none specific to hair... all just general sunscreen for skin.

I can’t imagine no beauty and personal care brand is looking at these trends and optimizing on their SEO or launching a simple SKU to be in this category, almost bereft of all competition.
