India is currently facing pressure in LPG supply due to disruptions around the Strait of Hormuz, a key global shipping route. But despite these geopolitical tensions, the country is not experiencing shortages of petrol or diesel.
So why is LPG affected while petrol and diesel remain widely available?
The answer lies in how these fuels are produced and supplied in India. Petrol and diesel are largely produced domestically through India’s strong refining network. India operates 23 refineries with a total capacity of around 250 million tonnes per year, converting imported crude oil into petrol, diesel and other fuels within the country.
LPG, however, depends heavily on imports. Around 60 percent of India’s LPG demand comes from imports, and nearly 90 percent of these shipments pass through the Strait of Hormuz. When disruptions occur in this region, LPG supply can quickly come under pressure.
Another factor is storage capacity. India consumes around 90,000 tonnes of LPG daily but has limited storage, which means the supply system relies heavily on continuous imports arriving on time.
In this video we explain why petrol and diesel remain available while LPG supply faces pressure and what this reveals about India’s energy system.
