In the damp green hush of the underbough hall
Where the ferns hang low like a tattered shawl
I followed a trail of impossible light
Little lanterns swinging in the veils of night

They were not made of metal, not made by a hand
But grown from the moss and the shadowed land
Soft bell-glows breathing an emerald flame
Calling me softly, whispering my name

The trees leaned close like eavesdropping kin
Every trunk tattooed with forgotten sins
A brook laughed once, then held its breath
As if it knew I walked with death

For the wise ones say: when the mossfolk wake
And hang their lanterns for mortals’ sake
You either find the path you lost
Or pay for wandering with a cost

Lanterns of the mossfolk, swinging in the dew
Show me what I’ve buried, show me what is true
Guide me through the root-song, through the woven air
Lead me to the heart of what I did not dare

They led me past the owls’ pale stare
Past bramble crowns and foxes’ lairs
To a ring of stones like knuckles raised
Guarding something old and crazed

At the center grew a thornless briar
Blooming pale with ghostly fire
And there I saw myself at nine
With sap-stained hands and eyes of pine

I saw the vow I’d buried deep
To never bow, to never weep
To never trust a hand again
To never call another “friend.”

The mossfolk’s lanterns flickered thin
As if my oath had starved the wind
I heard a voice like dripping leaves
“Child, let go the blade you sheathe.”

I dropped my pride like rusted mail
The forest sighed in one exhale
My childhood self stepped from the flame
Reached for my hand, and spoke my name

Lanterns of the mossfolk, dimming into dawn
I walked out not fearless, but less alone, less torn
You showed me where I’d broken, where I’d sealed the seam
And stitched me with your glow into a living dream

Now when the twilight spills its green
And mist climbs up from things unseen
I leave a single candle where
The mossfolk once had hung their prayer

If ever some lost wanderer comes
With hollow chest and beating drums
May they find that gentle light
And walk back whole into the night
