BEFORE a child will imitate words, they MUST be reactive to environmental stimuli, have an increased attention span, be able to interact reciprocally / share joint attention, communicate symbolically using gestures and finally, imitate words. Check out the full list below by Laura Mize.

2) Show, Tell and Model gestures when pairing them with SIMPLE words / commands!

3) Make it FUN! Ensure you face is providing higher level affect!

4) Focus on FUNCTIONAL vocabulary! "Help, Stuck, Go, Stop, Eat, Drink, Up, Down.. etc"
and ensure the interaction is MEANINGFUL for your child!

6) Draw attention to your mouth / face with speech sound hand cues:

7) Improve gestures and imitation skills through SOCIAL GAMES and ACTIVITES: Row your boat with your child in the laundry basket; airplane baby; ring around the rosey, tickle fights; scavenger hunts; happy and you know it clap your hand; wheels on the bus; patty cake; etc
