Louis Couperin (1626-1661), a prominent French composer of the 17th century, is best known for his contributions to the harpsichord repertoire. His unmeasured preludes (or préludes non-mesurés) stand out in the Baroque era due to their free, improvisatory nature. These preludes served as the opening movements of suites and reflect Couperin's innovative spirit, blending the elegance of French Baroque style with the spontaneity of improvisation.
Louis Couperin’s unmeasured preludes were notated using groups of long notes (“croches blanches”) connected by sweeping lines without bar lines or precise rhythmic values. The performer would determine the duration of each separate note. This approach allows for a highly expressive performance, where the interpreter has considerable freedom to shape the music according to personal interpretation and create an intimate and contemplative atmosphere.
