He Couldn’t Miss His Flight… So He Missed His Father’s Funeral

In an interview, Abdul Sattar Edhi was once asked: You have buried thousands of unclaimed bodies. Did you ever cry seeing any of them? He closed his eyes and went into deep thought. Then he replied:

Not usually… but once, my volunteers brought a very clean and dignified body. It looked like an elderly man from an educated and well-off family. His silver hair was neatly oiled and combed. He was dressed in a freshly washed, crisp white suit. Even in death, his personality appeared respectable and graceful. But he was just a body now.

A volunteer told Edhi that the body had been found outside a bungalow in an elite area of Karachi. As they arrived there, a Cab Taxi was waiting. A young man stepped out, handed them an envelope, and hurriedly said: These are the funeral expenses. He is my father. Please take good care of him and bury him properly.

Just then, someone inside the taxi shouted, You’ll miss your flight! The young man immediately turned and got back into the Cab taxi without another word. The Cab taxi sped away.

Edhi said: When I learned about this, I felt deep sorrow. As I looked at the body again, I felt as if he was silently pleading: Edhi Sahib, you become the guardian of all unclaimed bodies… please become mine too.

Edhi decided he would personally wash and bury him. While giving him the ritual bath, he thought: This man must have sacrificed so much to raise his children with comfort and dignity… Yet his son didn’t even have time to lower him into his grave.

As he washed the body, tears rolled down Edhi’s face. That day, Edhi said, I cried for the humanity. He ended with this reflection:

Perhaps we should focus more on educating and raising our children with values rather than just giving them luxury.
