“It’s just a beautiful thing.”
Gerard Lappin has been flying Judy Pay’s incredibly original P-40 Kittyhawk for the past couple of years — and he’s very clear about one thing:
“You baby that engine.”
With 54 inches of manifold pressure on take-off, the torque is dramatic — the left wing drops hard and you’re straight into right pedal. Heavy, powerful and full of character, this Kittyhawk does everything the books say… but it does it big.
“It turns like a beauty. Rolls really well.”
On Sunday, Gerard will fly formation with an Allison-powered Kittyhawk before breaking into big looping manoeuvres, barrel rolls and a roll-rate finale.
“We’re not there to display ourselves — we’re there to show how beautiful the aeroplane is.”
And it really is.
