More than 70% of DOJ Civil Rights Division attorneys like Jen Swedish have been tragically forced out under the Trump administration. We're grateful to Jen for sharing her story and honored that she's joined our Justice Connection team to protect the Department's mission-critical work from the outside.
Before joining Justice Connection, Jen proudly served for more than 15 years at the Civil Rights Division, where she enforced employment discrimination laws as part of the division's broader mission to protect all Americans from discrimination in nearly every aspect of our lives, including housing, voting, education, and policing.
Under the leadership of division head Harmeet Dhillon, the Trump administration has shifted its mission away from enforcing these laws—effectively rewriting congressional statutes through executive action, which runs afoul of the constitutional separation of powers. Jen, like so many of her colleagues, took an oath to support and defend the Constitution. For the first time in her career at DOJ, she felt pressured to violate that oath.
Jen warns that, "When the president decides which laws are important to follow and which are not, that is a very slippery slope" for our rights and freedoms.
The American people deserve to know what is happening inside their Justice Department — and we will continue to share stories like Jen's to promote transparency.
