INTERVIEW RUSHES INCLUDING BELOW:

Los Angeles - 16 October 2023
2. SOUNDBITE (English) Shawn Levy, director:
"Talented people who were not me tried when this novel first came out to turn it into a film and they couldn't crack it. And my whole my whole proposal to Anthony Doerr, the novelist, was 'It's too much story for two hours. You're talking about a 500 plus page novel that has incredible epic sweep and character intimacy. Let's not try to compress it and make those hard choices. Let's do right by it and use this emergent and flourishing form of the limited series in order to transpose as much as possible from the novel onto the screen."
4. SOUNDBITE (English) Shawn Levy, director - on casting blind actresses with no previous acting experience to play Marie as a child and a teen:
"It's a unique casting challenge, right? Because the protagonist, this story at both eight years old and 18 years old, is a young French girl who is blind. And the choices then were do it the conventional way, the way that's been done for decades, and hire a sighted actress to play blind. And yet, as I was in pre-production, it occurred to me and I increasingly felt like the way to do this best, not just right, but best, was to try and cast this lead role authentically. And that meant casting someone who was low vision or blind themselves. And after a global search, I found Nelle to play the young Marie and Aria to play the young adult Marie. But truly, it was a needle in a haystack level miracle to find two such smart. Young women and girls who not only had the lived experience of the character, but even more astonishingly, had never even acted or even auditioned before. So so that was that was thrilling and slightly miraculous. But I feel like the the DNA of this series. Is rooted in their singular authenticity."
6. SOUNDBITE (English) Shawn Levy, director - on helping Aria Mia Loberti learn to act:
"Aria, to her credit, she was already fiercely intelligent, but she knew what she didn't know. And that's a great place to start. Anything she said to me when we first met in person, she said, I want to be great. I don't know how to be great. So you need to teach me and you need to be relentlessly honest with me so I can figure out how to do this. At a level of excellence, and it was cumulative. Certainly, day one was not the performance we were seeing on day 40."
STORYLINE:
Shawn Levy couldn't predict the timeliness of his new Netflix limited series “All the Light We Cannot See,” based on a Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Anthony Doerr.
It follows a blind, young woman in hiding in German-occupied France and a Nazi soldier who was drafted against his will.
The lead character, played by Aria Mia Loberti, had never auditioned or acted before landing the role.
Levy was such a fan of the novel that didn't want to cut it down to a feature-length film, so he proposed to Doerr that it be turned into a limited series instead.
The four-episode series also stars Mark Ruffalo and Hugh Laurie and premieres Nov. 2.
