The growth of baby geese: the whole process from hatching to selling
I. Goose hatching
1. Selection of breeding eggs and hatching preparation
The life of a goose begins with a good quality breeding egg. The selection of breeding eggs is very important. Usually the eggs should have smooth shells, be free of cracks, be of good size and come from healthy breeding flocks. Breeding eggs need to be sterilized before hatching, usually by formalin fumigation or ultraviolet light irradiation to reduce bacterial and viral contamination.
2. Incubation environment control
The incubation period of goose eggs is about 30 days, which is longer than that of chickens and ducks. The incubation process requires strict control of temperature, humidity and ventilation:
Temperature: Maintain at about 37.8°C in the early stage of incubation (1-14 days), which can be slightly reduced to 37.5°C in the later stage (15-30 days).
Humidity: Maintain humidity at 60%-65% in the early stage, and raise it to 70%-75% in the later stage (shell pecking stage) to help the goslings break their shells smoothly.
Egg turning: turn the eggs 6-8 times a day to prevent the embryos from sticking to the eggshell and to promote uniform development.
3. Shell pecking and shelling
After about 28 days, the goslings start to peck the shell. At this time, it is necessary to reduce the egg turning, increase humidity, and let the goslings break the shell by themselves. If it is found that some geese have difficulty in pecking the shell, they can be assisted manually, but they must be handled carefully to avoid hurting the goslings.
4. Care of newborn goslings
Freshly emerged from the shell of the goslings wet feathers, need to be in the incubator for a few hours, until the feathers are dry before moving to the brooder room. Newborn geese have weak resistance, need to provide a warm, clean environment, and feed and water as soon as possible to strengthen the body.
Second, the geese divided into male and female
1. The importance of gender identification
The gender of geese affects the growth rate and feeding management, male geese grow faster and are suitable for meat; female geese have high egg production rate and are suitable for breeding. Therefore, it is helpful to distinguish between male and female as early as possible for scientific group feeding.
2. Common identification methods
(1) Turning the anus method (most commonly used)
Within 24 hours of the chick coming out of the shell, gently squeeze the cloaca and observe the reproductive protuberance:
Male geese: see a small spiral penis (about 0.5cm).
Female goose: only flat folds are seen.
(2) Observation of body shape and behavior
The male goose has a large head, a loud cry, and is active and aggressive.
Female geese have a more rounded body shape and a docile temperament.
(3) Feather identification method (applicable to certain breeds)
For example, the feather color of the male chick of Sichuan White Goose is lighter and the feather color of the female chick is darker.
3. Group management
After divided into male and female, can be divided into groups according to gender feeding, male geese can provide higher protein feed to promote weight gain, female geese focus on balanced nutrition, for the preparation of late laying eggs.
Vaccination of baby geese
1. Importance of vaccine
Geese have low immunity and are easily infected with diseases such as goose fever, avian influenza, duck plague, etc. Scientific immunization is the key to guarantee the survival rate.
2. Common vaccines and vaccination program
| Vaccine Type | Vaccination Time | Vaccination Method | Role | Vaccine Type | Vaccine Type | Vaccination Time | Vaccination Method | Role
| Goose Fever Vaccine | 1 day old | Subcutaneous | Prevent Goose Fever | Avian Influenza Vaccine | 7 days old | Prevent Duck Fever
| Avian influenza vaccine | 7 days old | intramuscular injection | prevention of H5N1 and other influenza viruses | Duck plague vaccine | vaccine for ducks | vaccine for ducks
| Duck Fever Vaccine | 14 days old | Nasal drip or water | Prevent Duck Fever (for some goose farms)
| Paramyxovirus vaccine | 21 days of age | Injection | Prevention of Newcastle Disease | Ducks | Ducks | Ducks | Ducks | Ducks
3. Precautions for vaccination
The vaccine should be kept refrigerated to avoid expiration.
Avoid stress before and after vaccination (e.g. long distance transportation, sudden change of temperature).
Observe the reaction after vaccination. Individual geese may be depressed for a short period of time, which is a normal phenomenon.
