Rheumatic heart disease (RHD) is a critical health issue in Papua New Guinea (PNG), ranking among the highest in the world with an age-adjusted death rate of 17.27 per 100,000 population. It is a leading cause of cardiovascular morbidity, often driven by poverty, overcrowding, and limited access to healthcare. Chronic valve damage, resulting from untreated rheumatic fever, frequently leads to heart failure, particularly affecting children and young adults.
In this episode of Health in Focus, we see this medical mission between the Port Moresby General Hospital and the National Heart Centre Singapore under SingHealth, who performed a weeklong of open-heart surgeries.
