The National Missionary Society of India (NMSI), the first ecumenical missionary organization was founded by 17 young people belonging to different denominations and institutions in the year 1905 in Serampore, West Bengal. Some prominent members among them are Vedanayagam Samuel Azariah, who later become the first Indian Anglican Bishop and Sadhu Sunder Singh, who is fondly remembered as the “Apostle with the bleeding feet” served in NMS as its honorary missionary.
Taking the Great Commission of our Lord seriously, the founders also wished that India should be reached by Indians, through Indian money, using Indian methodologies. The founders have borrowed the quote of William Carey “Expect great things from God, Attempt great things for God” as the watch word of the organization. NMS is the only approved mission body of the National Council of Churches in India (NCCI). All the historic churches have endorsed NMS as the missionary arm of the Indian Church. NMS is involved in reaching the unreached people groups of our motherland. We have missionaries stationed in 21 states and in the neighbouring countries of Nepal and Bhutan and people are added to the body of Christ every day.
