In this seminar, Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz, Nobel Laureate in Economics and professor at Columbia University, delivered a lecture based on his special contribution, “Human Potential, Security and Freedom, and the Good Society,” featured in the upcoming third issue of the JICA Ogata Research Institute’s flagship report Human Security Today, scheduled for publication in Japanese in March 2026. This contribution draws on his latest book, “The Road to Freedom: Economics and the Good Society,” which explores the multifaceted nature of freedom and its essential role in enabling individuals to realize their potential. Professor Stiglitz emphasizes that true freedom rests on the assurance that individuals can lead lives in which they realize their potential, and that human security—freedom from fear and want—is indispensable.
