The Akkadians, the Assyrians, Elamites, Babylonians and other cultures came to power adding their own contributions to the artistic legacy of the area and building on the artistic foundations of Sumer. The Achaemenid (Persian) Empire located in present day Iran, grew to become one of the largest empires of the ancient world and grew to control much of Mesopotamia. The Persians incorporated the ancient traditions of Mesopotamian cultures into their own, massive, cosmopolitan empire, reinvigorating and altering the ancient artistic traditions of the area.
