Black bears (Ursus americanus) are usually brown or black in color. The Kermode or #x27;Spirit Bear #x27; is a white coat color variant of the black bear, found in the coastal mainland and nearby islands of British Columbia (BC). The difference in coat color is caused by a single recessive nucleotide difference (A893G) in the melanocortin 1 receptor gene (Mc1r) which leads to an amino acid substitution from Tyrosine to Cysteine at codon 298 in the white phase, and is of unknown adaptive significance (Marshall and Ritland 2002. Molecular Ecology 11:685-697). White bears occur when a bear is homozygous for Guanine (G) at a single nucleotide site within the coding region of the autosomal locus, whereas brown or black bears are homozygous or heterozygous for Adenine (A) at this same nucleotide site. Bears sampled from one of these BC populations were scored at this nucleotide site with the following results: Genotype AA AG GG Number 25 47 18 If you can only observe the hair color of this sample of bears, without their genotypes, what is your estimate of the frequency of the quot;white coat quot; allele, assuming Hardy-Weinberg?
