On May second, 1982, the Southern Railway was operating an excursion between Memphis, Tennessee, and Sheffield, Alabama, behind leased Chesapeake & Ohio 2-8-4 #2716.
The locomotive had returned to service the previous year, but only had until the end of July before she would be laid up in the steam shop at Irondale, Alabama. With N&W 611 about to come online, it was decided not to spend money to repair cracks in the 2716's firebox. The locomotive would remain in the shop until the end of the steam program in 1994.
That was all in the future at the beginning of May, when George Redmond had his recording equipment set up for the round-trip to Sheffield. In this sound clip, the 2716 marches the train away from Pocahontas, Tennessee.
