“A little bird told me” – these words have long served as a vivid metaphor for someone disclosing information obtained through espionage, and not just since the popularity of Game of Thrones. In fact, the phrase likely originated in Germany. The oldest known document containing it is German: the verse epic Ruodlieb, dating from the eleventh century. This work describes a peace conference between kings and records the exchange of gifts involving birds.

At first glance, Ruodlieb appears to be merely an early form of a historical novel, written by a monk residing by Lake Tegernsee. In reality, however, it was likely a didactic text intended for the education of noble students in a monastery. Espionage, notably, was one of the subjects included in their curriculum. Simultaneously, the text provides valuable insight into medieval European spy networks and those of neighboring regions: espionage was not solely concerned with security-critical information. Spies were also instrumental in assessing the political interests of powerful figures of the time.
