Music Streaming and the Algorithmic Self: Music streaming and the algorithms that select music for listeners have radically changed not only the way that people listen, but the meaning of musical taste. This presentation argues that it also changes the way in which we can understand capitalism as constructing consumers. Whereas the 20th century music industry imposed taste-identities on listeners from the outside, the streaming algorithms of the 21st century graft onto our taste-identities from the inside, giving us technologically-aided versions of ourselves in ways that reframe the meaning of choice and freedom.
