Ford offered three lines which included the Special, DeLuxe, and Super DeLuxe. The flathead V8 engine was available in the DeLuxe models. In 1941, Ford updated the model lineup with styling that would continue for the 1942 model year, and resume after the war, continuing until 1949. The appearance was modern, with a wider body that nearly covered the running boards. There were pronounced front and rear fenders that were integrated into the body. The front headlights were positioned above and in front of the front wheels. There was a new three-part grille with a tall center section and twin kidneys lowered on the fenders.
The 1940s Ford models were available in a variety of body styles, including the Tudor and Fordor, coupes, sedans, wagons, and convertibles.
As beautiful as the 1940 Fords were, for 1941 there was a redesign. There was a new exterior design and the chassis received attention, starting with a longer (114-inch) wheelbase.
The Super Deluxe Fords, such as this coupe, could be spotted by the chrome grille sections and running board trim. Later in the production year, Ford added brightwork to the front and the rear fenders, also on this coupe.
1941 Ford vehicles rested on a 114-inch wheelbase with an overall length of 194.3 inches and a height of 68.15 inches. The six-cylinder, L-head, 225.8 cubic-inch engine had four main bearings, mechanical valve lifters, and delivered 90 horsepower at 3,300 RPM. The inline eight-cylinder engine displaced 221 cubic inches with three main bearings, mechanical valve lifters, a Ford two-barrel downdraft carburetor, and produced 90 horsepower at 3,800 RPM. Both engines used a three-speed sliding gear transmission with semi-centrifugal, molded asbestos linings and column controls. Stopping power was by hydraulic brakes on four wheels.
The Standard models were solely powered by a six-cylinder engine while the Deluxe and Super Deluxe coupe be equipped with either six- or eight-cylinder power. Standard (a.k.a Special) body styles included a coupe priced at $705, a two-door Tudor at $735 and a 4-door Fordor at $775. The Tudor was the most popular of the Standard model with 27,189 examples built, followed by 9,823 of the coupe and 3,838 of the Fordor.
The Deluxe models, priced from $730 to $965, were devoid of wheel trim rings, trunk light, or glovebox clock. There was no striping in the DeLuxe Ford, black-painted wheels. Only the center grille portion was chromed and the interior instrumentation panels were finished in Ebony grain. Standard amenities included dual wipers, sun visors, and glovebox lock. The most popular DeLuxe body style was the Tudor, priced at $775, with 177,018 examples built. There were 25,928 of the Fordor built ($815), 33,598 of the three-passenger coupe ($730), and 12,844 of the four-passenger coupe ($750). The station wagon was priced at $965 and 6,116 examples were built.
The Super Deluxe had Deluxe Ford wheels that were painted to match the color of the body and fenders. There was bright trim on the running board edges, a chrome grille sections, and ridges along the bottom edge of the bumpers. Standard amenities included a glovebox mounted clock, a drunk light, bright wheel trimmings, plastic Kelobra grain dash trim, wipers, and twin visors.
The most popular of the seven Super Deluxe body styles were the Tudor, priced at $820, with 185,788 units built. 88,053 examples were Fordor ($860), 45,977 were Coupe Sedan (two-door, six-passenger priced at $850), 30,240 convertibles priced at $950, 22,878 of the 3-passenger coupe priced at $775, and 10,796 of the $800 four-passenger coupe. 9,485 examples for the station wagon were built with a base priced of $1,015.
