Scary stories. Long ago, when a Hmong person passed away, the family would cut a long piece of bamboo to carry the body to the burial site. After the burial, they would cut that same bamboo into three pieces and leave them at the grave.
There was a young Hmong man who once heard the elders say, “If you take one piece of bamboo from a grave when you go talk to a girl, she will like you very much.” Believing this, late one night he went to the cemetery and took one of the bamboo pieces from a grave to bring with him while courting a girl.
But when he returned home afterward, he forgot to bring the bamboo back to the grave. Because of this, the spirit of the deceased became a restless ghost. Every night, that spirit would come and linger outside the girl’s wall, watching from the side of the house.
