Butterflies and moths (Lepidoptera) are one of the spectacular and important components of ecosystem functioning. Rainforests of the Western Ghats and adjoining areas are known to have a rich lepidopteran faunal assemblage. However there has been a limited documentation on the occurrence and distribution patterns of the above group. Though many species of Lepidoptera are treated as pests of forest and horticultural crops, they play a very important role as pollinating agents, maintain plant Biodiversity and serve as a vital link in the food chain.
Although the major surveys and systematic studies on the butterflies of Western Ghats were initiated a few centuries ago, a study following a multidisciplinary approach has not conducted so far, covering ecologically important habitats present along contiguous chain of different districts of the states within the Western Ghats range, is critical for understanding the distribution patterns. Preparing the district level inventory, assessing the species richness, identification of Endemic and endangered species, identification of local hot spots for future conservation, photographic documentation of all the species with seasonal morphs, and dimorphic species, etc to aid better identification is undertaken. Field survey conducted during 1998- 2002, covering all 9 Taluk, and identified total of 254 species, of which 16 species are shared endemics with peninsular India and Sri Lanka, and 24 species are strict endemics of Western Ghats and 10 endangered species identified. Assessment of status of each species as common, rare, etc was carried out based on encounter rate. Local hot spots identified based on species diversity assessment.
