How can stewards of distinctive collections use emerging technologies in service of robust description and researcher discovery?
In this session, Emilie Hardman—archivist, special collections librarian, and author of Bridging Capacity and Care: A Field Report on Archives and Special Collections—shares how AI can support reparative description at scale. This webinar will not present AI as a universal solution, but as one set of tools whose value depends on careful alignment with the needs of collections, practitioners, and the communities they serve.
Drawing from her work as Senior Curator at Reveal Digital—and use of JSTOR Seeklight, recipient of the 2025 Coker Award for Description from the Society of American Archivists—Hardman will illustrate how practitioners can apply emerging tools to deepen representation and surface under-described dimensions of archival collections.
You’ll hear how JSTOR Seeklight was used to explore the illumination of under-described materials in the HIV, AIDS & the Arts collection—and how its design continues to be shaped by the community it serves. JSTOR team members will also share how collaborative development and field feedback led to the development of JSTOR Seeklight and are central to its evolving capabilities.
This webinar is designed for archivists, special collections librarians, digital collections staff, and institutional leaders working to align technology with care, equity, and long-term impact.
