Описание: Daxu Ancient Town (大圩古镇), located about 20 kilometers southeast of Guilin (桂林) in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region (广西壮族自治区), is one of the most charming and well-preserved old towns in southern China. Nestled along the east bank of the Li River (漓江), Daxu offers a quiet, atmospheric retreat filled with Ming and Qing dynasty architecture, stone-paved streets, and the lingering rhythm of traditional life.

Founded more than 1,000 years ago during the early Song Dynasty, Daxu was once a bustling trading post along the river, where merchants, scholars, and craftsmen converged. Though its commercial importance has faded, the town’s old wooden houses, arched stone bridges, and slow, peaceful ambiance remain beautifully intact.

Walking along the narrow, weathered stone streets, you’ll pass two-story wooden storefronts with carved eaves and red lanterns swaying in the breeze. Many of the homes have been inhabited by the same families for generations, and some still operate as traditional workshops — cobblers, herbal medicine sellers, or rice wine brewers. Locals may greet you from their doorways, and elderly residents sit in the shade playing Chinese chess or sipping tea from porcelain cups.

A highlight of the town is the Longevity Bridge (寿字桥), a graceful single-arch stone bridge that spans a quiet stream leading into the Li River. It’s an ideal spot to pause and take in the view — fishing boats drifting on the water, bamboo groves rustling in the wind, and the outline of Guilin’s karst hills rising in the background.

Daxu is not overly commercialized, which adds to its charm. Unlike more touristic ancient towns, it retains a genuine feeling of everyday life — laundry hanging over narrow alleys, chickens wandering near stone wells, and incense smoke drifting from small family altars. Some residents open their homes to visitors, offering homemade snacks or a chance to see antiques collected over generations.

For photographers and cultural travelers, Daxu is a dream: soft morning light casting long shadows across stone walkways, moss growing on tiled roofs, and stories etched into every wooden beam.

Daxu Ancient Town (大圩古镇) may be just a short drive from the busy streets of Guilin, but it feels like a step into another century — a living window into the past where river trade, family heritage, and quiet beauty still flow together, untouched by time.
