The viceroyalty of New Spain is relevant because it was essentially Mexico. Established after Hernán Cortés’ conquest of the Aztecs in the 1500s, it allowed Spain to control large areas of what is now Mexico and parts of the modern United States, especially the Southwest like Arizona and New Mexico.
