Armed with UC Berkeley alumnus support and donated sleep apnea machines, Grace O'Connell, Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Don M. Cunningham Endowed Professor, wanted to help during the COVID-19 outbreak. She and her students came up with an innovative and cheap solution to the ventilator shortage. They converted sleep apnea machines to breathing support devices.
Grace and her teamed partnered with Aenor Sawyer and Brian Daniel at UCSF to perform laboratory testing with the device and to get clinical partners.
