Although we're still in the depths of winter it isn't too early to get a few things started. However, these will all need to be started indoors as it's definitely not warm enough outside for sufficient germination. I use a heat mat under the seed tray to help regulate the temperature and improve germination. Keep in mind that these seedlings will have to live inside, or be protected in a greenhouse, until around April before they can be planted out into the garden. They will also require supplementary lighting to ensure they don't get leggy, unless you have a very well lit windowsill for them.

If you're more of a casual gardener, don't worry! You don't need to start seeds this early. Visit your local nurseries in the late winter/early spring and they will likely have starts of all of these plants for you to buy. Let them do the hard part while you enjoy the harvest!
