Target training teaches an animal to touch a target with part of its body and/or follow it from one location to another. Through learning, the animal can become classically conditioned to the target (so the target reliably predicts outcomes) and it can then be used within operant training to guide voluntary movement, support cooperative care, facilitate enclosure navigation (out of a hide, to a door, onto/over objects), and enable low-stress husbandry and vet behaviors.
