Typhoon Krathon strengthens ahead of Southern Taiwan landfall｜Taiwan News

Over the past several hours we have seen the storm slow down as it veers north. We still expect it to track north-northeast and then shift northeast. The speed of its movement will remain slow. At the eye of the storm we are seeing winds of strengths reaching 16 on average or more than 17 on the Beaufort scale. We think the storm will maintain its structure and strength as it makes landfall in Southern Taiwan. Since its movement is rather slow and since its structure will be compromised by the terrain after landfall, we’re not expecting as much rain in the north and northeast as we had initially forecast.

The CWA has revised its rain forecast down for the north and northeast, but still the storm should not be taken lightly. On Wednesday, extremely heavy rains are expected in Southern Taiwan, Hualien, Taitung and mountainous areas in Central Taiwan. By Thursday, Northern Taiwan will see localized extremely heavy rains. The storm is expected to cut across Taiwan and make it back to the sea in Yilan or Hualien on Thursday afternoon. It is the first time in 66 years that a typhoon enters Taiwan from the south and exits from the east.
