As we celebrate 90 years of Philippine Socioeconomic Planning, we reflect on the journey that shaped DEPDev today.
Our history began in 1935 under President Manuel L. Quezon, with the creation of the National Economic Council (NEC) through Commonwealth Act No. 2. The NEC advised the government on economic and financial matters and formulated an economic program anchored on national independence.
Over the years, the institution evolved to meet the country’s development needs. In 1972, the NEC, the Program Implementation Agency (became PES in 1966), and other economic bodies from previous administrations were consolidated into the National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) through Presidential Decree No. 1.
In 2025, a historic milestone was achieved when President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed Republic Act No. 12145, reorganizing NEDA into DEPDev and strengthening its mandate, independence, and capacity as the government’s primary agency for development planning, policy coordination, and monitoring of the national economy.
As we advance socioeconomic transformation under Bagong Pilipinas, DEPDev reaffirms its commitment to fully realizing our collective AmBisyon—a matatag, maginhawa, at panatag na buhay para sa lahat.
