These are a couple of commercials for the 1958 Dodge, which was one of the fastest cars of its day. 1958 was a poor sales year for the auto industry, however, and these models are somewhat rare today.
1958 Dodges were available with two automatic transmission choices, PowerFlite and TorqueFlite. PowerFlite was the older 2-speed transmission, and TorqueFlite was the new 3-speed transmission.
For anyone who wanted to drive it like a stick-shift, Button "1" was first gear, Button "2" was second gear, and Button "D" (Drive) was third gear. Button "1" would go up to around 40 mph, and Button "2" around 75-80 mph.
TorqueFlite models with a four-barrel carburetor would easily peel rubber from a stop. They were fast!
1958 Dodges came standard with torsion-bar suspension, which eliminated most of the sway that most other cars of that period experienced on sharp turns.
Available 1958 Dodge lines were Coronet, Royal, and Custom Royal (the top line). In addition, hardtops carried the designation Lancer, as in Custom Royal Lancer. The most powerful engine option was the D500, roughly equivalent to the Plymouth Fury.
In the spring of 1958, a wide hirizontal stainless trim piece along the side of the car was added, along with a wide license plate escutchen, and some other styling features. These features were collectively called the "Spring Trim option". The models shown in these commercials included the Spring Trim Option.
