Dr. Junhyoung “Paul” Kim specializes in healthy aging at Texas A&M University’s School of Public Health. In this video, Kim discusses how people with mild cognitive impairment can prevent or delay the progression of Alzheimer's disease or dementia by putting together puzzles or using word games and apps.
Kim’s research shows that traditional puzzles and word games give patients a sense of achievement, thus creating a positive and fulfilling sense of emotion. His research incorporates new age technology and user-friendly apps tailored to cognitive training and short physical activities that are at the user's fingertips via tablet or smartphone. The brain stimulation from memory-building activities has proven to delay mild cognitive decline in users.
Kim has developed personalized technology to assist in mild cognitive decline by creating customized jigsaw puzzles. He adds photos of family members, user interests and audio to stimulate the user’s brain and halt the progression of Alzheimer's disease and dementia. He encourages caregivers and family members to identify activities their loved ones are passionate about, like social interaction, sports or puzzles, because the emotional connection can significantly aid in memory challenges, resulting in return to more normal brain functions.
