Vitamin E is also called Tocopherol or Tocotrienol. It is an antioxidant that protects RBCs and membranes from free radicals.
A deficiency In Vitamin E leads to hemolytic anemia, acanthocytosis, reduction in vibrational sensation and proprioception due to demyelination of the posterior column, and ataxia from demyelination of the spinocerebellar tracts. This is similar to B12 however, will not present with megaloblastic anemia, hypersegmented PMNs, or an elevated MMA level.
Vitamin E excess leads to enterocolitis in infants and an increase in anticoagulation properties of warfarin.
