Scoliosis caused by a Leg Length Difference? Here is how to check

Описание: A common treatment for scoliosis is to put a heel lift in one shoe to correct a leg length difference. This is a good treatment option IF the leg length difference is actually there, and IF it is contributing to the scoliosis.

How do you know? Clinical tests have been very limited in accuracy of picking up on leg length differences. The gold standard is to do a full leg x-ray to determine the length of the bones of the legs. But, this isn't always available.

So, what to do? Well, a recent study introduced a cool way to measure for leg length differences with nothing more than a scoliometer and some blocks or magazines you can measure the height of.

Now, one disclaimer...leg length differences can "cause" scoliosis, but this is uncommon. Most scoliosis is structural and is caused by the shape of the bones in the vertebrae. With that said, the imbalance of scoliosis can also cause a leg length difference to develop.

A lumbar scoliosis can also cause some rotation into the sacrum, so be careful when you are interpreting the results with lower curves.

The best way to determine structural scoliosis is an x-ray, but apical rotation of the spine is also indicative of structural scoliosis.

So, be careful when you are interpreting the results of this test. It is a good test if used to make good clinical decisions.
