A Doctor. A Lawyer. The Father of Lawrence County’s limestone industry. Eccentric and mysterious to many, this is the story of a legendary man.
In October of 1818, a mysterious man rode his horse into Lawrence County Indiana. Upon arriving at Palestine, he told people he was a Dr from the east, and set up a small practice, in the tiny frontier village. But he was no ordinary Dr.
Dr Winthrop Alvin Foote was known to swim across the White River, when he heard that someone was sick, on the other side. Being the only physician in Lawrence County, he would often ride his horse, up to 70 miles, to see a patient. He saw the needs, and he filled the needs, as if he had some kind of superpower.
When the town needed someone to plaster Palestine’s new, two-story courthouse, he did the entire job by himself. Realizing the town needed a prosecuting attorney, he passed the Indiana bar and took the job, putting the lawless in jail. And when many people began dying from a strange illness, he used his legal knowledge and influence, to move the town to a more healthy location: what would become modern day Bedford, Indiana.
Dr Foote became a businessman, amassed over 3,000 acres, in Lawrence and surrounding counties, and opened the first limestone quarry in Indiana. Subsequent quarries would not only become world-renowned, by providing high-quality limestone building blocks, for iconic monuments and buildings, but would continue to this day, nearly 200 years later. He had an uncanny vision of the future, and prophesied a day that others could not see, a day when Indiana limestone would be used hundreds of miles away from Lawrence County.
But who was this mysterious man from the east, that could seemingly do anything, and put so many things into motion, with only his will? This is the story of Lawrence County’s mysterious, Dr Foote.
