The phenomenon in the science of hydraulics which is frequently observed in open channel flow such as rivers and spillways, when liquid at high velocity discharges into a zone of lower velocity, a rather abrupt rise occurs in the liquid surface. This phenomenon is known as a hydraulic jump and is often the preferred mechanism of dissipating energy at the bottom of spillways. By controlling the depth of the tailwater, or receiving reservoir, the jump may be forced to occur within the apron of the spillway, thereby reducing the erosion of the channel further downstream.
