No warning. No escape. In seconds, Uttarkashi’s Dharali village was swallowed by flash floods.
Initial reports called it a cloudburst. But the IMD defines a cloudburst as 100 mm of rain in one hour over 10 square kilometers. Dharali didn’t cross that threshold.
Then why did it happen? The answer lies in the topography. Uttarkashi lies between 800 and 6,900 metres, with glaciers, narrow valleys and steep gorges. Even moderate rain turns deadly here.
In fact, some areas like Haridwar saw even heavier rainfall — 300 mm in 24 hours — but the plains were largely unaffected. That is the danger of the hills. It is not just how much rain falls, but where it falls. Add to that, over 1,260 glacial lakes in Uttarakhand, many of them silent threats waiting to burst. Nature doesn’t wait for definitions. But, are we prepared?
