We all know about Mardi Gras because of Beads, Balls, and Floats, but Ashley Monique Menard of The Eff, Your Fears Podcast, took a tour of the world-famous Crystal Weddings in Lafayette, La to see how the King Cakes get made.
Mardi Gras Season begins each year on January 6, the Feast of the Epiphany that celebrates the Biblical story of the Three Magi visiting with gifts for the Baby Jesus. Mardi Gras is also known for parades, music, good food, and drinks.
Carnival, or Mardi Gras season, is synonymous with King Cake Season. The King Cake tradition is thought to have been brought to New Orleans from France in 1870.
A King Cake is an oval-shaped cake to mimic the crown of a king. It is decorated in royal colors of PURPLE, which signifies "Justice," GREEN for "Faith," and GOLD for "Power."
In the past, such things as coins, beans, pecans, or peas were also hidden in each King Cake. Today, a tiny plastic baby is a common prize. Each person looks to see if their piece contains the "baby." If so, then that person is named "King" for a day and bound by custom to host the next party and provide the King Cake.
Crystal Weddings is a family owned business that opened its doors in 1995, they can create all of your cake needs, and they really treat their customers like family. Their quality starts with the finest ingredients available, and the results are in the taste, and their expert decorators transform your vision into reality.
