A farmer was plowing his field in the Midwest, miles away from the nearest river. Suddenly, his plow hit something hard. He didn't hit a rock. He hit the paddlewheel of a massive 1856 steamboat.
Full Description: It sounds impossible: A shipwreck buried 45 feet deep in the middle of a cornfield. But it’s real, and the science behind it is terrifying.
In the 19th century, massive rivers like the Missouri and Mississippi were "wild beasts." They didn't stay in one place. Through a geological process called River Meandering, these rivers would constantly shift their path, moving miles to the left or right over decades.
This ship didn't sink on land. It sank in a river that moved away.
When the ship hit a snag and went down, the river quickly buried it in mud. Over the next 100 years, the river channel shifted miles to the east, leaving the wreck stranded underground. The old riverbed filled with dirt and eventually became farmland.
