(12 Oct 2017) Authorities issued a voluntary evacuation order for Sonoma as winds up to 45 mph (72 kph) were expected Thursday in areas north of San Francisco. Those conditions could erase modest gains made by firefighters.
At least 24 people have died and at least 3,500 homes and businesses have been destroyed by the blazes, which were well on their way to becoming the deadliest and most destructive in California history.
Crews engaged in "back burns" by using fire to fight fire. The crews intentionally set dry brush ablaze and monitor it as it burns out. California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection division commander Sean Jerry says when the brush burns out it creates a buffer zone to contain the out of control wildfire.
The smoke from fires burning north of San Francisco make for difficult breathing— many people don breathing masks.
