German composer and pianist Carl Reinecke enjoyed a successful career as the conductor of The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1860 to 1895, where he succeeded Felix Mendelssohn in the prestigious position. There he premiered many celebrated works by Mendelssohn, Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Dvorak, Verdi, Grieg, and Strauss among others, which would eventually become standard orchestral repertoire. It was during this time also that he met two remarkable flutists for whom he was inspired to compose pieces.
The first of these flutists, Wilhelm Barge held the post of principal flutist in the Gewandhaus Orchestra from 1867 to 1895. For him, Reinecke wrote the slighty-more- famous sonata, Undine Op. 167, published in 1882, based on the European fairy tale about the water nymph Undine. Barge was joined in 1881 by 28-year-old Maximilian Schwedler who became co-principal flutist. It was for the virtuosic Schwedler and his Schwedler- Kruspe flute, which he co- invented, that the Concerto in D Major was written. Schwedler later became the flute professor at the Leipzig Conservatory.
