Should you Boil Milk before use?
Boil raw milk for 5-8 minutes after it reaches a rolling boil to make it safer to drink. For pasteurized milk from a carton, simply warm it enough to be drinkable and avoid boiling for more than 10 minutes to preserve nutrients, as it is already processed.
For raw milk
Place milk in a thick-bottomed pot over low to medium heat.
Add a little water to prevent burning.
Wait for the milk to come to a boil.
Once it starts to boil, reduce the heat to low and let it boil for 5 to 8 minutes to kill bacteria.
For pasteurized (packaged) milk
Warm the milk to your desired temperature, as it is already safe to drink.
Avoid boiling it for more than 10 minutes.
Boiling for a short time (2-3 minutes) after it's heated can be enough for some purposes like making yogurt, but it can damage some nutrients
Important considerations
The exact time depends on the quantity of milk, the starting temperature, and the heat setting.
Boiling for too long can reduce the nutritional value of the milk.
Using a double boiler is a preferred method for heating milk to prevent scalding.
