This is one of those forms whose name you have to say in Sanskrit, because the translation, “big toe pose,” sounds so stale and uninspired that it captures none of the sap, none of the essence of what it denotes. This is a gesture of release, of dropping the delusions of the heart, allowing the crown of the ego to fall back into the soil of the earth.
This is the deepest bow you can make, before you collapse into prostration, so when embodied with full spirit, this is an expression of profound humility, but one that continues to stand on its own two feet.
In the progression of the ritual, this is a moment of giving over to gravity, and to the centripetal force of inwardness, a moment of turning down and turning in, without losing the thread, losing the breath or losing the sense of embodiment.
The most important thing here is too feel the immensity of the earth, pulsing beneath the feet, and to draw that support upward, into the earth of the body, into the altar of the pelvis, and then to release it back down, on the falling current of the breath, through the open expanse of the heart, and on through the arms and hands back into the earth.
