Bangladesh is a land of wetlands.
With rivers and canals flowing like veins, Bangladesh has become known to the world as a riverine country.
Besides, haor, baor, beel, lake, hill fountains, streams and the vast Bay of Bengal are important aquatic ecosystems of this country.
These places have been inhabited by a diverse species of aquatic plants and animals.
For characteristic differences, each wetland holds its distinct ecosystem.
The main sources of Bangladesh’s flowing fresh water rivers are the mountains at north and ample rainfall.
Having water flow throughout the year, these rivers have become a dynamic sanctuary of millions of lives.
These freshwater reservoirs are inhabited by numerous small invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.
These rivers are the main source of our country’s freshwater fisheries.
Different species of aquatic mammals are found in the river.
River Dolphin and Otter are prominent among those.
Though, once River Dolphins were seen aplenty in our rivers, they are now rare.
Fish is one of the main foods of the Bengali people.
A large part of these fish come from river.
Apart from fish, the presence of invertebrates like snails, clams, crabs, shrimps etc. in the river is also extremely important.
Because birds and other animals survive on these animals.
Various bird species including Sandpiper, Wagtail, Plover, Lapwing, Egret, and Tern flock to the river banks and chars, in search of food.
Bangladesh’s haor region is a reservoir of aquatic animals.
Different species of aquatic animals are found here.
Various species of aquatic animals roam through the aquatic plants.
Schools of Tengara, Punti or Chanda fish are seen through the clear surface of Haor water.
Haor is the breeding ground for different species of native fish.
During monsoon, native fish lay eggs in haor water.
When eggs hatch, fish spread to different parts of the country through rivers.
So, haor is extremely important for our indigenous fish.
The hill regions occupy a large part of this country.
Heavy rainfall has created numerous fountains here.
These fountains, divided into small or large streams, flow through the hill forests.
As a result, these streams also bear presence of life.
Crabs, shrimps, snails, fish and various species of amphibians and reptiles are seen in these streams.
The streams combine to form hilly Rivers, which is a prominent source of freshwater fish.
Various species of aquatic animals are seen in these rivers.
Various species of amphibian and reptiles roam the hilly rivers.
With endless blue water, the Bay of Bengal is a diverse ecosystem.
Rich with aquatic biodiversity, the Bay of Bengal is home to thousands of animals.
It encompasses tiny corals, as well as huge whales.
Invertebrates like Octopus, Squid, Jellyfish, Snails, Oysters, Shrimp, Lobster, Marine Crabs roam all over the sea.
Marine fish is one of the prominent vertebrates.
The Bay of Bengal is a huge reservoir of fishes, such as Hilsa, Pomfret, Surma, Tuna, Coral, Bombay duck, Ribbon, Sting ray, etc.
The fishery resource has immense contribution in our economy.
The reptiles of the Bay of Bengal include marine turtles and snakes.
A few species of marine turtles are found in the Bay of Bengal.
Although they live in the sea, they come to different islands to lay eggs.
The mammal, Dolphin, roam across the blue waters of the ocean.
The Whales can be seen alongside them.
The Whales are usually seen in the Swatch of No Ground.
One of the prominent biodiversity rich areas of the Bay of Bengal is coral island Saint Martin, harboring numerous aquatic animals.
In the sea bed, numerous tiny corals live together to form a coral reef.
These coral reefs are home to many species of plants and animals.
Such amalgamation of aquatic animals makes the Bay of Bengal a paradise of marine biodiversity.
However, our aquatic animals are being endangered by various pollution, climate change and other environmental degradation.
The number and species diversity of freshwater aquatic animals are decreasing due to river filling, unplanned dam construction, excessive aquatic resources extraction, etc.
In the same way, the aquatic animal kingdom of the Bay of Bengal is getting endangered due to pollution and over extraction.
In addition, hilly fountains and streams are drying up due to deforestation.
As a result, the aquatic animals of hilly regions are threatened.
If this continues, the whole country’s aquatic ecosystem will become unbalanced.
Therefore, appropriate steps must be taken to protect aquatic ecosystems through conservation of aquatic animals and stopping our environment destructive activities.
Only then our wetlands will sustain, our country will flourish.
