The United States Department of State has announced an indefinite suspension of visa processing for nationals of 75 countries, including several in the Caribbean such as St Lucia.
The decision was outlined in an internal memo circulated on January 14th, which indicated that the suspension forms part of a broader policy initiative aimed at tightening controls on visa applicants.
In a statement shared on X, the State Department said the pause would apply to countries whose migrants are accessing public welfare benefits.
In addition to St Lucia, Caribbean countries listed include Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Grenada, Haiti, Jamaica, St Kitts and Nevis, and St Vincent and the Grenadines.
